Hypothyroidism is a medical condition in which a human’s thyroid glands are unable to produce enough thyroid hormone. The primary purpose of thyroid glands is to run the body’s metabolism.
The most common treatment of thyroid is taking thyroid daily hormone replacement medications or hypothyroidism drugs.
The causes of hypothyroidism vary; it can occur due to several factors, such as; autoimmune disease, over-response to hyperthyroidism treatment, thyroid surgery, radiation therapy, and medications.
The following are hypothyroidism symptoms;
Fatigue
Increased sensitivity to cold
Constipation
Dry skin
Weight gain
Puffy face
Hoarseness
Muscle weakness
Elevated blood cholesterol level
Muscle aches, tenderness, and stiffness
Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints
Heavier than normal or irregular menstrual periods
Thinning hair
Slowed heart rate
Depression
The best way to take a hypothyroidism drug is on an empty stomach, ideally 30 minutes before your first meal. By doing so, you are helping your body absorb the full dosage.
The manifestations of hypothyroidism medicines can be a little overwhelming, and most of the people end up getting anxious to get some relief. However, the effect of the drug can take up to 2 weeks. Be continuous and regular; take medicine for the full prescribed length of time.
It is advised to purchase the same medicine from the drugstore that you have been taking and have been prescribed. This is said so, as the other drugs might not contain the same amount of thyroid hormone as another drug company may contain. If, in any case, you do change your manufacturer, your doctor may need to change your dose.
There are some common side effects that hypothyroidism drugs can cause, such as; hair loss, excessive sweating, weight loss, insomnia, nervousness, fatigue, anxiety, diarrhea, and others.
Inform your doctor if you witness any of these side effects.
Some supplements may claim to be useful for thyroid support but may aren’t tested and may contain actual thyroid hormone. If you take these supplements along with thyroid replacement therapy, they could cause you health problems like; irregular heartbeat, irritability, and weight loss.
Keep in mind the above ways to take your hypothyroidism medications. If you do not see any improvement in your condition, consult your doctor, he may increase your dosage until the symptoms subside.
