The term mental illness varies and refers to a wide range of mental health conditions. Mental illness is a condition that can obstruct your daily activities; it is a disorder that affects your mood, thinking, and behaviour. The conditions that come under mental illness include; depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, addictive disorders, and eating disorders.
Talking about psychiatry, we are still in the stone age era, where it is hard for people with mental illness to live or talk about it. The constant fear of getting judged or called ‘mad’ makes a person’s condition even worse. This situation becomes even worse when you have to act like being normal, also when you are devastated or disturbed from inside.
This one condition can make your life vulnerable and miserable. However, the symptoms of this condition can be managed with the help of certain antidepressant medications.
According to a survey, there are times where people do not even know they are going through a mental illness. So, mental illness awareness is vital in today’s world where stress and human life go hand in hand. It is essential to know the WARNING SIGNS so that you can act on it in time and stop it from escalating.
If you see changes in your relatives or friend’s behaviour such as; withdrawal from social interactions, problems in functioning at work, reduction efficiency level, imbalance in sleep, and eating are some of the significant possible signs or symptoms of mental illness. If you see these changes, consult a healthcare professional who can further help you or guide you in addressing the problem and help prevent your loved one from developing more severe symptoms. Do not ignore any of the triggers.
Bring your loved one forward and make them realize how important it is to speak about their problem. Though, one of the hardest things to do is to come forward and talk about your mental illness. But make them believe that if they do so, they will feel a notch better.
Tell them how crucial it is to express their concerns to a person who is ready to listen to them. Be encouraging and patient. Remind them always that ‘seeking help is a sign of strength’. Caress them with your warmth and talk, and do not be judgemental at all.
Educate and learn about mental health and treatments. The more you read and get to learn about the problems related to mental illness, the more you will be able to understand your loved one better and be able to help them correctly.
It is essential to mentally prepare yourself first and then raise your hand for help. If you are unable to understand what your loved one is going through, it will be difficult for the two of you, and you will end up making their condition worse.
